These picturesque islands, located in the Andaman Sea off the western coast of Thailand, have long been a sanctuary for seafarers, traders, and fishermen. The name "Similan" is derived from the Malay word "sembilan," meaning "nine," as the archipelago is comprised of nine main islands. While the islands have been inhabited by sea gypsies in the past, they gained significant attention in the 20th century due to their exceptional natural beauty. Recognizing the importance of preserving this unique ecosystem, the Similan Islands were designated as a national park in 1982. Please note that the Similan Islands are open for visitation during a specific period of time each year. The islands are accessible to visitors from 15th October to 15th May. This seasonal opening is implemented to protect the delicate ecosystem of the islands during the rest of the year, allowing for natural rejuvenation and preservation.
